Being stuck at home this year doesn't mean that Mother's Day can't be special. Sure, you probably can't go out to brunch at your favorite restaurant. Instead, why not try something different? Start thinking outside the box -- it's all about making Mom feel special. Here are 5 ideas to get you started:
1. PLAN A MOTHER'S DAY PICNIC
This one's easy! Put together all of Mom's favorite foods and move the feast outdoors! Most grocery and warehouse stores have a selection of prepared foods ready to go -- think fried chicken, potato salad, crusty bread.
Or how about a picnic brunch? OJ, bagels, fried egg sandwiches, a thermos of piping hot coffee -- heck, splurge a little and serve mimosas! You're only limited by your imagination!
How about a twilight picnic? Set up your feast just as the sun starts to go down -- don't forget the candles and bug spray! If you include flashlights, this picnic can go on well into the wee hours. And the kids will love playing flashlight tag, giving the grownups a little one on one time!
How about a "Mom's favorites" theme? Serve all of her favorite foods, regardless of whether they make an actual meal. For me it would be bagels, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and pear martinis -- pure bliss! Plus you get bonus points for showing Mom you REALLY know what she likes!
Don't forget the essentials -- sunscreen, bug spray, napkins and wipes, plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated. And of course, a Blue Zoca waterproof blanket to keep everyone clean, dry and cozy!
2. GIVE MOM A MOTHER'S DAY GARDEN
If Mom's a gardener, this is a creative way to give her a jump start on her garden. Pick up a selection of vegetable seedlings at your local big box store or nursery. Some reliable standbys are tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, green beans, but you can spice things up by choosing varieties Mom's never planted before. How about an heirloom tomato? Or purple peppers? If Mom prefers fruit, you can choose strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants.
Now comes the REALLY thoughtful part of the gift -- help her plant them!
Make sure you have potting soil, soil boosters (my dad always swore by MiracleGro), gardening gloves, and gardening tools.
This works even for moms with little or no outdoor space -- many vegetables can be grown quite successfully in pots, thank you very much! And filling a pretty pot with all the tools she'll need makes a stunning gift! You can even buy pre-assembled planting kits -- how about this one that lets her grow 4 different kinds of exotic fruits?
This is a gift that keeps on giving -- she'll think of you all season long!
3. GIVE MOM SOME FAMILY MEMORIES
If your Mom loves to post on Facebook and Instagram to document everyday life and special occasions, why not give her a mini photo album filled with her favorite pictures? Themes are great for this gift too -- how about your last family vacation? Or a Covid 19 album? Some day this will all be over and she might like to flip through and remember all the crazy things she did to keep the kiddos amused during lockdown.
4. GIVE MOM AN AT-HOME SPA DAY
Being stuck at home means no trips to the nail salon or hairdresser! If Mom hasn't been able to get her roots done, she'd REALLY appreciate a helping hand! How about setting some time aside and helping her with her touch up? At-home hair color kits come with everything you need, including gloves to keep your hands stain-free. Don't think it's something you can't handle - it's really not rocket science, but it's hard to do it yourself because it's tough to get the back of your head! Let Mom tell you exactly what to do and you'll both be thrilled with the results!
If Mom is really missing her weekly nail appointment, you can help with that too! Unless she's ambidextrous, it's really tough to do both hands neatly -- this is one even kids can handle!
5. GIVE MOM A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
If Mom's been keeping the kiddos entertained with Disney movies and superheroes, she may be ready for some grownup video entertainment. Why not let her make a list of 3 or 4 movies she's been wanting to see, then find them online or rent them and schedule a Mom Movie Marathon!
You can combine this with her favorite take-out. Or maybe a big bucket of her favorite movie treats (I like peanut M & Ms).
Oh, and YOU MUST WATCH THEM ALL WITH HER.
No eye rolling allowed.
